  • How to kickstart a new career in tech with CompTIA Tech+

If you’re looking to pursue a new career in tech or see if a career change is right for you, knowing where to start can be a challenge. You might feel overwhelmed by all the options or wonder if you’ll enjoy working in tech. By learning the basic building blocks of technology, you can put yourself on the path to success and feel confident about making your move to tech.

New tech pro Steve Manhertz spent a long time contemplating his decision to make a career change. In 2019, finally made his move and started learning CompTIA IT fundamentals. While different learning methods work for different people, Steve chose to self-study by combining CompTIA online training with books. After passing the exam and earning his CompTIA IT Fundamentals (CompTIA ITF+) certification, he had the skills, knowledge and confidence he needed to begin working in tech.

“I wanted a career I could expand,” says Steve Manhertz. “I was drawn to the tech industry because it’s challenging and there are many areas of specialization to choose from.”

What is IT? Learn all the fundamentals with CompTIA Tech+

CompTIA Tech+ is an upgrade of our CompTIA IT Fundamentals (ITF+) training and certification, which will be retiring in 2025. If you have a CompTIA ITF+ certification, you don’t need to take Tech+ as you already have the skills you need to move on to a higher certification. Depending on your new career goals, CompTIA A+ is a great next step.

Why choose Tech+?

Starting a new career can be intimidating but learning CompTIA IT fundamentals can help you talk the talk – and walk the walk. Tech+ is the only pre-career training and certification that covers all areas of tech foundations. Best of all, you don’t need tech experience, a degree, or advanced math skills.

What will you learn with Tech+?

Tech+ training will give you a solid foundation in tech fundamentals as well as practical experience based on real-world scenarios. On top of learning CompTIA IT fundamentals, you’ll also get an introduction to emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum computing, and more.

Here are some of the topics covered:

IT concepts and terminology: Learn basic concepts and discover the essentials of computing, problem-solving, and more.

  • Infrastructure: Get the knowledge you need to manage devices and networks securely.
  • Applications and Software: Understand the workings of software applications and operating systems.
  • Software development: Explore the basics of coding and software creation.
  • Database fundamentals: Learn about data management and database interfacing.
  • Security: Gain insights into protecting digital information, privacy, and data.

How will I learn with Tech+?

With our CompTIA training and learning options, you can choose the method that best suits your learning style. Your options include instructor-led training, live online training, CertMaster Learn, CertMaster Practice and more.

CertMaster Learn, a comprehensive eLearning platform, offers knowledge checks to help you retain more information, real-world simulations for practical experience, and analytics for understanding your progress.

CertMaster Practice helps you build confidence as you prepare for your Tech+ exam. It pinpoints any gaps in your knowledge, so you know which topics to focus on more while studying, and it provides immediate feedback for even more helpful support.

What’s the next step after Tech+?

Once you’ve completed Tech+, you’ll know if a career change or new career in tech is right for you. You’ll also know how to perform tasks like setting up a computer and securing a small wireless network. If you decide to continue your path in tech, you can keep training and start studying for a more advanced exam, like CompTIA A+ or Network+, to get the skills you need to be ready for your first tech job.
